Loring papers, 1875-1961 (bulk 1875-1878)

Letters from George Loring in Arizona to his family back east describing the Arizona Colonization Company, travel conditions to Arizona, and conditions in towns of Phoenix, Prescott, Yuma, Maricopa Wells, and Tucson. He mentions social and business activities. There are also biographical sketches of various Arizona pioneers. The sketches were gathered by George's son, Madison Loring, for the Arizona Historical Society.

Watchmaker; Loring came to Arizona in 1876 with the Arizona Colonization Company. The Company was formed in Boston following a series of newspaper articles recruiting young men to migrate to Arizona. The group established the town of Flagstaff then disbanded. Loring went to Prescott then settled in Phoenix where he operated a watch business.
